This paper outlines some of the drivers and benefits of virtual workplaces, describes tools and technologies available in today’s marketplace, discusses virtual world approaches and provides a look ahead.
It also contains a detailed case study of Cisco’s virtual collaboration technologies and strategy. In 2009, Cisco staged its Global Sales Experience (GSX) event as a virtual meeting. Over 17,000 people attended, saving a total of 211 million air miles by not flying to the event. Cisco estimated it saved about 90% of the meeting costs (budged at $80 to $85 million, including air travel, hotel expenses, and other costs associated with putting on a three-day event).
