Tightsizing – new federal mantra for offices

An article in the Federal Times this week reported that several US Federal agencies are reducing office space. Examples:

  • Treasury Department headquarters: Staffing grew in the 18% last eighteen months. As a result, space per person shrank from an average of 191 square feet to 167, avoiding an estimated $1.9 million annually in additional leased space costs. Dan Tangherlini, assistant secretary of the Treasury, calls this “tightsizing."
