- Give prizes.
A team from Harvard Business School and the Norwegian School of Economics investigated the role of prizes in innovation. They looked at awards given by the Royal Agricultural Society of England for invention of new farming equipment. Researchers found that the number of patents and patent renewals was much higher in years when the Royal Society awarded prizes.
