Symposium I: The Challenge Of A Distributed Workforce

Categories:

Attendees at the first annual New Ways of Working symposium, held May 31 – June 2, 2006 in San Jose, California, came to learn more about emerging workstyles and share their expertise on collaboration. Thought leaders from a variety of disciplines discussed The Challenge of a Distributed Workforce.

The conference, held at the Dolce Hayes Mansion, a 19th century private estate turned luxury hotel, was highly interactive. Each attendee was invited to participate based on their expertise in a particular area of distributed work. They came from rich and diverse backgrounds in government, industry, and education – even the media. Among them were CEOs, industry analysts, architects, psychologists, consultants, university professors, researchers, and representatives from industries as divergent as high tech and furniture manufacturing.

The conference was organized around a series of roundtable discussions, with attendees actively participating in one or more panels to kick-start the discussion. Discussion topics included:

  • The biggest challenge we face ...
  • The globally distributed workforce: problem or opportunity?
  • Have we gone too far?
  • Breakthrough innovation in remote and distributed teams
  • So, who needs offices (places)? – a vision charrette
  • Sharing informal and interpersonal knowledge
