US Senate passes telework bill
Last night, in a unanimous voice vote, the United States Senate passed the Telework Enhancement Act of 2010 (S. 707). The bill would require all federal agencies to establish telework policies, select a Telework Managing Officer, integrate telework into the agency's continuity of operations plans, and (optional) create pilot programs for testing travel expense reimbursement to accommodate teleworking employees. What's next for this legislation? Does it have a chance passing the House? (The House killed a similar bill earlier this month.)

21st Century Office Project: There's an App for That
The World Wildlife Fund is launching a new campaign to coincide with Earth Day this year: The 21st Century Office Project. The campaign has two major objectives: 1) Explore how web 2.0/mobile applications can help deliver significant emission reductions and 2) support companies that want to move towards a 21st Century office. As part of the program, it offers a free tool so you can measure your CO2 as well as time and money savings from new technology solutions for smarter office work. You can download the app onto your iPhone (an Android version is coming soon). Thanks go to Ann Zis who forwarded this information from Bruce Klafter. The future of the office furniture industry
We summarize an interview featured in this month's edition of Metropolis magazine. Editors at the magazine talked with design directors from five major contract-furniture companies about the state of the industry, the future of workplace design, and the role of research in a down economy. The companies: Allsteel
, Haworth, Herman Miller, Steelcase and Teknion.

When asked what was the next wave of ideas about how people work, and how their companies are adapting workplace designs, the designers offered a variety of solutions: European work styles and bench seating; looking at the enclosure needs of open environments; simplifying and dematerializing the workstation; and improving connections between people as well as with people and their devices. Worth the read. http://www.newwow.net/members/node/1565

Distributed work study opportunity – focus on managers
A new study is being undertaken by researchers from Pennsylvania State University, New York University and the University of Illinois. They are looking for organizations to participate in the study which focuses on managers of distributed workers. I wrote to the chief researcher, Sumita Raghuram, to get more details. She wrote back with a description of the study and an invitation to participate. The proposed research will explore how managers' perception of the power implications of having subordinates telecommute influences their support for distributed work. The study, sponsored by the Society for Human Resource Management, will be international in scope. Since supervisory norms differ by country-culture, data will be collected from several countries. There is no cost to participate and all participating organizations will receive a copy of the final report. To download the study proposal, see http://www.newwow.net/members/node/1537
