From our members: We're grateful to our members and colleagues who contributed articles, links, and even video clips this week.
- The Ann and Eric act. If you were unable to attend our summer symposium (V), you missed a clever song by Ann Bamsberger and Eric Richert. Do not despair, Panu Ã…kerman caught it on video and sends us this clip. http://www.newwow.net/members/node/760#comment-643
- Effective communication is related to retention & trust. Elaine Mackoff sent us a link to a study that investigated the consequences of employee communications. The study found that over 75 percent reported that the way in which their organization communicated with them influenced their desire to remain with the organization. http://www.newwow.net/members/node/964
- Tertulia follow-up. Edel Keville sent us a couple of links as follow-up to questions asked at last month's Tertulia, a discussion on Lessons about Distributed Work from the MySQL merger. One is a clip showing how Sun's CEO, Jonathan Schwartz, lives his life as a Digital Nomad. http://www.newwow.net/members/node/930#comment-645
New in the library: Enabling Work Practice by Mike Joroff, et al.
Many thanks to Mike Joroff for contributing a copy of his latest study and making it available to NewWOW members free of charge. The study is supported by the dWork project, Helsinki University of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mike writes that the study "offers a major shift in thinking about 'workplace-making.' Good practice today aligns place and IT supports with the activities of those who do the work, as that work is now done. This is acceptable in many, if not most, circumstances. However, sometimes there is a need for, and an opportunity to create a 'transformative workplace,' one that creates new supports for work as an intimate part of the redesign, or creation of new work practices." Sustainability and the triple bottom line
Steelcase's 360 magazine had a Deep Dive piece last month on how organizations should employ a triple bottom line view of sustainability. The piece provides an example of post-occupancy data showing the effects of elements such as natural lighting, spaces for sharing and exchanging ideas, quiet space/privacy when needed, etc. Companies profiled include:
- Bison Transport, a truckload firm in Winnepeg, Canada, that reduced its turnover from the 100 percent plus range common in the trucking industry, to 24 percent, one of the lowest in the industry.
- Smith Carter, a Canadian design firm, wanted their facility to represent their corporate values including using space to help grow intellectual capital, enhance and sustain creativity, and develop a more agile organization.
More news this week:
- BYOC-Bring your own computer-to work. Citrix Systems Inc. is encouraging its workers to BYOC. The new program offers employees a $2,100 stipend to buy a laptop and a three-year service contract. http://www.newwow.net/members/node/423#comment-646

- Sleeping at work - studies support it. Sleep improves performance, learning, memory and even creativity, says a recent article in the New York Times. Recent sleep research indicates that napping at work gives the brain a much-needed break. http://www.newwow.net/members/node/150#comment-644
