September Tertulia plans
Hold the date for the next Tertulia on September 24th from 9 am to 12 noon PDT. Location to be announced. The tentative topic is "Combining Real and Virtual Worlds for Collaboration."

Fellowship nominations
NewWOW's Advisory Board has approved the establishment of a fellowship--an honorary membership--to recognize a distinguished colleague within the community. The individual selected should have an exceptional background in the field and be able to provide value to our organization. Please contact Jim Creighton (jim.creighton@newwow.net) and Joe Ouye (joe.ouye@newwow.net) to submit your nomination. We would appreciate receiving Fellow nominations no later than July 10, 2009. Note: If you have a suggestion for a gender-neutral term for "Fellow," we'd love to hear from you.

From our members:

Elaine Mackoff shares the article, "Six Deadly Orthodoxies of Recessions." Elaine says it contains "useful historical examples -- and reminders about strategic investments in innovation instead of solely cost-cutting during down times." The article also covers "how investing in innovation can actually enhance cost-cutting." http://www.newwow.net/members/node/1153#comment-853

David Coleman sends us a call for papers from the Cutter IT Journal. The Journal is planning an issue on "Measuring the Success of Social Networks in the Enterprise." The purpose of the issue is to spark debate and analyses of the new metrics used by organizations to make critical decisions around social and collaboration technologies, current trends, and what to expect in the future. David will be guest editor of the edition. If you would like to submit a paper, send him an abstract by July 10. Follow link for details. http://www.newwow.net/members/node/1267

Renate Fruchter recommends TIME magazine's May 25 cover story, "The Future of Work." Renate comments: "The magazine has a series of articles discussing 10 ways jobs will change, where the office is going, who will be the boss and how he/she will look like, the fact that there may be no organizational ladder to climb, and people may never retire but constantly find new paths and opportunities. The article offers 10 lessons in how to succeed in the new American workplace." We summarized the TIME feature last month. Check it out at: http://www.newwow.net/members/node/25#comment-828

Cisco teleworker survey reveals major savings
Today, Cisco announced the results of its Teleworker Survey, an in-depth study of almost 2,000 company employees across the globe. According to Cisco's Internet Business Services Group, the company has generated an estimated annual savings of $277 million in productivity by allowing employees to telecommute and telework. In addition, employees reported significant increases in work-life flexibility, collaboration, and overall satisfaction as a result of their ability to work remotely. The average Cisco employee telecommutes two days per week and spends nearly 2/3rds of his or her time collaborating and communicating. Two new generational/workplace studies
Two recently released studies focused on generations and the workplace: one from the Center for Work-Life Policy (CWLP); the other from the London Business School's Centre for Women in Business. The CWLP study identified many similarities between the two dominant cohorts--Gen Y (20-somethings) and Baby Boomers (50plus somethings). The second study renamed GenY the "Reflexive Generation" and revealed four key challenges when managing these workers. http://www.newwow.net/members/node/1272

Greenest building yet: USGBC HQ
Metropolis magazine features one of the greenest buildings in the US: the headquarters of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Instead of constructing an entirely new building, the Council decided to renovate a 1975 office building -- the "ultimate act of recycling." Among the innovations: 1) an "eco-corridor" using space around the perimeter of the building for circulation rather than for executive offices with a "view" and 2) an Environmental Dashboard to monitor building-performance metrics and compare them to industry benchmarks. http://www.newwow.net/members/node/584#comment-854

Don't shrink; rethink
Steelcase's 360 ezine showcases the redesigned offices of their Global Supply Chain Management department, which reduced net usable space per person to about 100 square feet and supports 70 people in space that originally housed 36. How was this done? Everyone gave up their assigned space. According to Steelcase designer Julie Barnhart-Hoffman, new hires are now more productive from the first day of work. http://www.newwow.net/members/node/1269

More news this week:

  • Calculating the benefit of pandemic planning
MIT's Sloan Management Review carried a short piece on the benefits of being prepared with pandemic plans. The article suggests that managers make a case for pandemic preparedness using cost-benefit analysis and performance measures. http://www.newwow.net/members/node/75#comment-856

  • PJs with suit jackets
This week, Intel launched a telework campaign with a odd twist: People dressed in suit jacket, tie and pajama bottoms passed out fliers about ScratchIT, a campaign that promotes the company's teleworking technologies. http://www.newwow.net/members/node/615#comment-855
