Study shows energy savings from Open Work
Sun Microsystems announced the results of a study that explores the question: "Does Open Work really save energy, or just transfer energy cost and load to employees?" By comparing home and work energy use, Sun's sustainable computing team examined how the energy load is shifted from company to the individual. They learned, for example, that the office equipment energy consumption rate at a Sun office (130 watts per hour) was two times that of home office equipment energy consumption (64 watts per hour). Study: America's gas addiction
The Telework Exchange released a new study, "How Much is Too Much - America's Addiction to Gasoline and Its Impact on the Workforce." The study examines Americans' commuting habits and the steps employees are taking to lessen the effects of constantly rising fuel prices. They found that 92 percent of respondents believe that their job could be done from home via telework, but only 39 percent currently telework, a deficit of 53 percent. In addition, rising fuel costs are influencing job choices: 89% of respondents say that they would limit a job search due to potential commuting costs; 28% are looking for a new job today, due to commuting costs. Many thanks to David Coleman for alerting us to this study. For more on the study, check http://www.newwow.net/members/node/615#comment-561

Cisco workplace challenges
David Rush talks about the most challenging aspects of workplace change at Cisco. One issue is "the process of changing minds! It's one thing to put forth a compelling, data driven business case for doing something new and different, and quite another to get people to believe "it won't hurt", as the doctor says. You can get peoples' attention, and you can get them interested, even excited. But, when delivery of the new workplace is underway and "people moves" become imminent, a strange sense of "buyers' remorse" sets in."
