Just-in-time labor here to stay
BusinessWeek's cover story last week focused on the plight of American labor. It explored the sea change in US labor practices brought on by the Great Recession. Recessionary conditions have prompted many companies to turn to just-in-time labor forces that "can be turned on and off like a spigot." Over a quarter of US workers have "nonstandard jobs" (part-timers, temps, independent contractors, day-laborers). What is in store for the US workforce? More of the same – miniscule raises, worsening working conditions and more freelance and temporary jobs. It may take five to ten years to return to 2007 job levels, if ever.
