Brave new world of media or same-'ole-same-old? Empirical data trumps technology forecasts every time
Jay Brand posted a challenge to those who cite technology forecasts as "proof" of generational differences in media use. According to research from Ball State University's Center for Media Design (sponsored by Nielsen), generations are surprisingly alike in their interaction with media (TV, computers, mobile devices, multi-tasking). Check out the rest of Jay's comments (plus he names names). http://www.newwow.net/members/node/1673

New in the library: Sustainability Through Changing Organizational Workstyles
Joe Ouye and Hal Levin share two articles they wrote for publication. The shorter version will appear in the upcoming CoreNet Global Sustainability Community (No.1) Newsletter. The longer version will be posted on the CoreNet Global Sustainability Community website. Here's an excerpt from their introduction: "Despite what has been described as a 'perfect storm' that will result in significantly increased corporate attention on environmental sustainability, the opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE) by how, where and when we work remains largely untapped. For instance, in the recent New Ways of Working alternative workplace benchmarking study, 'sustainability' was ranked near the bottom as either a driver or benefit of alternative workplace programs. And yet, we will show there is tremendous potential for improving sustainability by changing how, when and where organizations work--what we call organizational workstyles." Featured white paper: Strategic Investment--Not Cost Containment
Jay Brand from Haworth's Ideation Group shares a recent paper that expands on a brief presentation he gave Tuesday afternoon in Chicago. Jay says, "I believe the paper outlines a primary challenge for distributed/mobile/remote work programs (although these are not the primary focus of the paper). That challenge involves questions like 'What are the positive benefits of mobile/distributed/remote work to the workers involved?' 'How does a mobile/distributed/remote work program enhance the human experience of its participants?' Positive benefits conceived in this way would provide a rationale for such programs, because they would then directly contribute to organizational outcomes like productivity and innovation." Here's a snippet from the paper: "We may be close to a 'law of diminishing returns' whereby if we reduce workspace any more, we will impact the quality of the workplace and indirectly influence employees' performance.” Read more: http://www.newwow.net/members/node/1674
