Latest Symposium 9 Updates
- Symposium 9 (Social Media and New Ways of Working) June 27- 30 in Chicago.
In the spirit of the theme, we will be using Facebook as a platform to capture commentary, photos, and videos of the symposium instead of having a note taker. In addition, we will ask teams of attendees to create a social media tool as part of a group exercise. This will be an adventure, but there's no better way to learn about social media than to use it.
Please register online. We still have a few places available for the symposium next week. Registration is included as part of membership for corporate and colleague members. Non-members pay $900. All attendees pay for their hotel rooms and related costs. In addition, each attendee pays $300 to cover incidental food and beverage costs. http://www.newwow.net/members/registration/symposium/9

New in the library: Updated fact file
Originally a project of the Benchmarking Committee, our members-only Fact File has taken on a life of its own. The file (an Excel spreadsheet) records quick facts from public information about company initiatives for new ways of working. Information is collected about the business drivers, solutions, and results of an organization's program. Source information and links are also included. Some of the over 100 organizations listed include: American Express, Bank of America, Best Buy, BDO Seidman, British Petroleum, Capital One, CIGNA, Continental Airlines, DuPont, Gap, Genzyme, Haworth, Hilton Hotels, HP, HSBC Bank, Intel, JPMorgan Chase, McKesson Medical Health Solutions, MetLife, Motorola, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Procter & Gamble, Royal Bank of Scotland, Sun Microsystems, US Navy, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Our latest update adds the following organizations: Accenture, Applied Materials, Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, Ernst & Young, Interpolis, Microsoft, Nortel, Rabobank, Unisys, the Virginia Department of Taxation and Vodafone. Do companies need headquarters?
David Coleman forwarded a commentary from David Carr, a columnist for Forbes magazine. Carr questions the need for an office and describes a couple of companies that have gone the no-office route. One example: OnSite Consulting, a hospitality industry turnaround firm, shed its offices about a year and a half ago. A few employees are embedded in client offices; most work wherever they need to. "Our clients don't want to see our office, don't want to see the conference room. They want us to come to them," says company president, James Sinclair.

New study: Teleworking can hurt career
Every couple of years a flurry of articles appears saying that teleworking is harmful to one's career. This time, the assertion is backed up by a study from researchers at University of California at Davis and the University of North Carolina. In a study of "passive” face time," the research team found that face time gives onsite employees a valuable edge. It has a direct, and sometimes unconscious, effect on how managers view employees. US President orders agencies to cut $3billion in excess property
Last week, President Obama issued orders to federal agencies requiring them to generate $3 billion in savings by the end of fiscal year 2012 by unloading unneeded office buildings and other properties. The Office of Management and Budget reports that agencies now have over $1.2 billion in excess properties or are partially or completely vacant. Cost savings will be accomplished by eliminating costly building leases, consolidating facilities and increasing telework. http://www.newwow.net/members/node/615#comment-1072
New fed survey shows telework gaining support
A new report by FedScoop, a government media and marketing company, shows that federal managers are beginning to view telework in a more favorable light. "Ninety-three percent of managers said they are satisfied with work done remotely and 81 percent agree that their management ability is unaffected by telework," said Goldy Kamali, FedScoop's president. The survey also revealed that federal agencies are not fully taking advantage of using remote workers to support continuity of operations. More at:

Summer mashups
We ran across a couple of interesting mashup ideas when researching social media. One celebrates "Social Media Day" on Wednesday, June 30. The idea: find other people in your area to hang out with and organize an event. Last time I looked, there were 453 meetups planned in 83 countries. http://www.newwow.net/members/node/1592#comment-1078
The other is a series of events, planned for every Wednesday this summer. Organized by The Energy Project, "Take Back Your Lunch" events are designed to get people outdoors, away from their offices, and having lunch with like-minded people. The Energy Project conducted a poll to learn about people's workplace behaviors and learned: Sixty percent of the respondents took less than 20 minutes a day for lunch, 20% took less than 10 minutes and 25% never left their desks at all.
