US Senate passes telework bill
Last night, in a unanimous voice vote, the United States Senate passed the Telework Enhancement Act of 2010 (S. 707). The bill would require all federal agencies to establish telework policies, select a Telework Managing Officer, integrate telework into the agency's continuity of operations plans, and (optional) create pilot programs for testing travel expense reimbursement to accommodate teleworking employees. What's next for this legislation? Does it have a chance passing the House? (The House killed a similar bill earlier this month.)

Symposium 9 news
- Session update: Patricia Roberts and Tish Kruse will present case studies of leading companies who are leveraging social media for business benefit and will share JLL's own experience with these technologies. Here's more of their session description: Technology is now leading change in workplace strategies. Cloud computing
offers internet-based hosted solutions for IT infrastructure, storage,
applications and services, with significant implications for corporate real estate and workplace programs. Also, through their use of social media and social networking, Millenials are changing the way we work more than at any
time in history.
Video recording or symposium notes? So far, we've heard from a couple of members on the question of whether to generate written notes or audio/video recordings of sessions. Hal Levin votes for video with a very brief version of notes. Patricia Roberts suggests using social networking technology to allow two-way interaction by both in-person and virtual participants. What do you think? Post your comments at: http://www.newwow.net/members/node/1596#comment-1047

Member question: Medical needs and flexible offices
If Price asks: "Has anybody encountered and solved the issue of staff in flexible environments whose clinical needs restrict their workplace flexibility?" He is looking for specific suggestions for things like "special orthopaedic chairs for a person with back trouble and special settings for VDUs for a person with visibility issues. . . I am really looking for people who have solved it." Please post your suggestions at: http://www.newwow.net/members/node/1635
Microsoft Amsterdam follow-up
Our story on Microsoft's Amsterdam offices (see Case Study: Microsoft NL, Schiphol, Amsterdam, http://www.newwow.net/members/node/1624) elicited a couple of comments from members. Bas Singer says he has visited the MSFT Amsterdam office recently. What struck him was "not only the workplaces themselves, but also the services provided with them" such as how meeting rooms are booked. Bas asks if someone from Microsoft could tell us more about how they handle meeting room management? If Price took exception to a line in the case study that read "Not even the general manager has an office." If explains: "The General Manager is probably the last person who needs an office in a well thought out building. Space by need not status should be the first principle of a modern agile office."
