In the introduction, the authors write: “New Century City (NCC) developments are driven by inter-organizational and cross-industry collaboration, open systems for R&D, and workers who have the aptitudes and skills required by the networked, knowledge economy of the future. NCCs are an appropriate response to the current environment of industry transformation, rapid change, and uncertainty.”
This paper, prepared for a workshop held in Seoul, Korea, November 9-11, 2009, includes a description of NCCs, their distinctive features, principles guiding their creation, participants, and a discussion of mediated environments. In addition, several case studies of New Century Cities are included: Abu Dhabi, Belfast, Cambridge, Massachusetts, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Salford/Manchester, Seoul, Singapore and Zaragoza, Spain.
