Publication Outline:

Innovation is widely perceived as critical to organizational survival. In large organizations, innovation is typically generated by teams of people representing multiple disciplines, functions and organizational units. In order to draw on expertise scattered around the world, companies are increasingly turning to remote virtual teams as the generators of innovative products and processes. The goal of this paper is to describe what is currently known about innovation in teams, and especially innovation in remote virtual teams. Creativity may not require collaboration, but collaboration--people working together--is almost always required for innovation. This means that collaboration is an essential precondition for innovation.
The paper is divided into the following sections:

  • General observations on innovation and virtuality
  • Innovation in teams
  • Managing innovation in remote virtual teams
