You would think that, if anyone, we would have a good definition of “new ways of working.” It is after all the name of our organization. But while it’s easy to say what we do (“research and explore new ways of working”), the Research Advisory Team for the research on "Measuring Work and Work Performance" struggled to define “new ways of working” itself. A flurry of email exchanges shows the progression of our definition:
Gabor Nagy suggested we use the alternative workplace definition used in our benchmarking study: “Alternative workplace (AW) is the combination of nontraditional work practices, settings, and locations that supplement or replace traditional offices.”
